Together We Sing

There are moments when I am at a Sunday worship service, and as people are singing praises to the Most High God, I feel as though I’ve been given a glimpse of heaven. Some of my favorite songs to sing are the ones that remind me of the hope of heaven. And when I hear these songs, it’s as if I’ve been transported to those eternal dwellings that Jesus is preparing for His people.

These are just little snippets of some of my favorites. I hope you’re singing right along with me. And even if you don’t know how the songs go, I’m sure you can appreciate the meaning behind these words.

I love all the verses to this hymn, but when I get to this last stanza, I cannot contain my emotions, as I think of what Jesus Christ has done for me.

Behold Him there the risen Lamb,
My perfect spotless righteousness,
The great unchangeable I AM,
The King of glory and of grace,
One in Himself I cannot die.
My soul is purchased by His blood,
My life is hid with Christ on high,
With Christ my Savior and my God!
(Written by: Charitie L. Bancroft, “Before the Throne of God Above”)

Again, by the time the congregation arrives at the last stanza of this other beautiful hymn, the whole building seems to shake from the increased volume. I am certain I am not the only one crying in my heart, “Come, Jesus, come!”

And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
Even so, it is well with my soul.
(Written by: Horatio G. Spafford, “It is Well With My Soul”)

This one was sung at a few of the funeral services we’ve attended. Though our hearts were grieving, how appropriate to rejoice that while we sung this song, our loved ones were finally beholding their First Love face to face.

Surrounded by Your glory, what will my heart feel?
Will I dance for You, Jesus? Or in awe of you, be still?
Will I stand in Your presence, or to my knees will I fall?
Will I sing hallelujah? Will I be able to speak at all?
I can only imagine
I can only imagine
(Written by: Bart Millard, “I Can Only Imagine”)

I’ve mentioned this one before. This is what I would want sung at my own funeral. I hope my family remembers that. ๐Ÿ™‚

What a day that will be,
When my Jesus I shall see,
And I look upon His face,
The One who saved me by His grace;
When He takes me by the hand,
And leads me through the Promised Land,
What a day, glorious day that will be!
(Written by: Jim Hill, “What a Day That Will Be”)

  1. I love “I can only imagine”! It always makes me stop and think about what meeting Jesus face to face and going to heaven will really be like. I can’t wait for that day to finally come! ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Music can be so powerful! Thank you for sharing some of your favorites and the feelings that go along with them. I needed to hear this today–you helped to remind me why I do music ministry and why I love it so much. It is part of God’s purpose for my life.

    1. I thank God for gifting people, like you, to serve the church body in this very special way. I used to attend church services very tight-lipped and embarrassed to be heard singing out loud, but now I understand it to be a most fitting way to express our love for our Savior. God bless!

  3. this was an awesome reading to wake up to!! I too have gotten lost in the moment of worship, where I feel I am at the throne of God giving praise. I was at a concert once, and everyone was singing along to Angus Dei. The band quit playing music and the sound of our voices seemed to shake the building. it felt as if when I opened my eyes, that I would see Heaven! I felt so happy and fulfilled at that moment, I could imagine no greater joy. I We have been created for this reason, to worship our Creator. Thank you for reminding me of this moment. I will leave you with another favorite song of mine that reminds me that even while I am on this earth, I can do everything in my life to God’s glory. Thank you for blessing me with this post, and have a blessed day!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEqdDdvFXZ0&feature=youtube_gdata_player
